120 years ago, Cicely Mary Barker was born June 28, 1895 in Croydon, England. She was an English illustrator who was best known for her Flower Fairies. You may have seen many of her illustrations and highly popular series of children’s books today.
What caught my eye about her work was how she combines poetry with her drawings. I believe this is where I was first inspired to create my own images and poems. When reading her poems they actually sound like little songs which I like to make up melodies to go along with.
There are several small books but I love them all so much I purchased The Complete Book of the Flower Fairies. It contains all works from Flowers Fairies of the Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Trees, Garden, Wayside and Alphabet.
Cicely Mary Barker continues to be an inspiration to the fairy community. Her work is often seen featured in handmade items on Etsy or even tea cups and fabrics. It’s beautiful to see her work live on through so many generations and appreciated still to this day.
